Album Review: SLEEP WAKER Alias

Words by Jimmy Glinster

The last two times I listened to a band with Sleep in their name, they pretty much both put me to sleep. Hopefully this is a more thrilling experience for us all.

The album opener and title track Alias gets its Djent on before bursting into a singalong chorus which reminds of the early post-hardcore trend where the music shifts from brutally heavy to pop choruses.

THRICE Announce Album, Release Single

Returning with their 11th studio album, the dynamic and explorative California-based rock band Thrice announce Horizons/East, out September 17 via Epitaph Records on streaming platforms.

The album exemplifies art as a work of recognition — the human task of perceiving oneself amid details, disasters, and blessings as a relentlessly relational phenomenon among others. In this, Horizons/East is the rare rock album on which interrelatedness is a theme, painting an adventurous and lush landscape mixed by Scott Evans that the band self-produced and recorded at their own New Grass Studio.

HEAVY REGULAR Bacon’s Slices #6

Words by Matt Bacon

So one of the free things that musicians don’t take nearly enough advantage of is Spotify playlists. There are so many possibilities with them, and they are a great way to grow your band’s presence on Spotify and really start to reach that next level of growth and outreach that will get people checking you out.

Ultimately, you want to be creating playlists and engaging with your community on Spotify the same way you do on other forms of social media.

Album Review: SWITCHFOOT ‘Interrobang’

Words by Jimmy Glinster

In this edition of NOT SO HEAVY Magazine reviews, we take a look at Grammy award winning “Rock” band Switchfoot. A band I know the name of but not so much the sound of, so I had to do a quick Google to remind me of why the name rings a bell. I find a couple of older videos of some tunes that I may have heard before, but that never really had any impact on me.

Laying It On The Line With MEMORIST

Having recently signed to Year Of The Rat Records, UK metal outfit Memorist have plunged straight into a new era of music for the six piece, breaking away from the harder edged rock elements that have defined them over their first three singles and  pushing them more towards metalcore style leanings.

After the success of those songs which attracted the attention of their new label, Memorist have kicked up another gear with their latest single The Empiric, enjoying the freedom and confidence that comes with self belief.

Album Review: SEETHER ‘The Purgatory’ E.P

Words by Jimmy Glinster

Weird little concept, this EP from the Seth Efracun quartet Seether. Let’s release a five track EP with two versions of one previously released single and a couple of new/unreleased tracks.

Seems legit.

So, the opening track of course is Wasteland, a track we’ve all heard before, well, some of us anyway, but not me, I haven’t listened to this band since they released that song about the singer breaking up with that hot goth sheila from Evanescence.
