A VHIISIION Of The Future

New Zealand based artist VHIISIION has dropped his anticipated debut EP Evolve.

Primarily known as a guitarist for Kaosis, VHIISIION has backed his resolve to cut a 5 track EP dripping with nu-metal nuances and rap sensibilities.

Heavily guitar-based, Evolve refuses to be tied into one genre, with nu-metal, metalcore, punk and rap all combining to produce a fresh take on an aging sound that proves music has no limitations except those which you place on it.

For Those About to Squawk: Waldo Pecks on Enslaved, Repuked and Incinceration

What’s up, guys? Sometimes I have some positive things to say, sometimes I don’t. Looks like this one is well… maybe you should just read on.

Ever like not get into a band and then try to review it? This is me with Enslaved’s new one Utgard via Nuclear Blast. I’m not sure how I feel about this, I’m sure that I shouldn’t really start on their 15th release, but I’ll try to keep an open birdbrain here. There is some cool stuff here, notably “Jettegryta” is the standout track for me, with a more pounding, sorta thrashy thing going on. There is some more “atmospheric” stuff on here, and it breaks up the sound here. I’m not really sure here, this is very “middling” at times, and not super exciting, but it’s not awash in monotony either. This is one of those records that Enslaved fans will find very exciting, but for me, it’s just OK. So, just so I don’t get any hate, I’ll give it 7 Fucking Pecks.

When you call your band Repuked you had BETTER deliver. And on their third effort, Dawn of Reintoxication, these swedes DE-LIVER (get it?). So, what about this? When your lead track is called “Vodka Til the Grave” it better be fun. Fun it is. This is that sorta “easy to head bang to” metal that sports studs and leather. Odes to drinking, sado masochism, and well… drinking. These guys, although they rip, don’t take themselves that seriously. The more I’m listening to this, the more I’m kinda digging on it. Musically, this is kind of akin to old Swedish thrash death with the emphasis on the “thrash.” Think like a SUPER fun Niphilhiem, OR like a blackened thrash Municipal Waste from Sweden. Complete with puking “effects”, I dig it. 7 Fucking Pecks.

Do you want some BROOTAL death metal? Incinerate is hitting us with Sacrilegivm on Comatose. This is NOT to be confused with the 8,000 other bands called Incinerate. This is the Incinerate from Minneapolis/California and now Canada? Does that clear anything up? This is not super tech, not super caveman. Planted firmly in the middle of that, is some slamz, and some AMAZING solos here. This is a decent record, but what is really sticking out here are the solos. This guy is incredible. The production here is a little warm for my taste and could benefit from a little more “teeth.” All in all, this is a solid record, but just like most slam/brutal death records, there’s not a lot here (except for the solos) to differentiate itself from others in the genre. 6 Fucking Pecks.

Until next time… Waldo out!

No Corporate Beer Reviews: Trappistes Rochefort 10

Beer: Trappistes Rochefort 10
Brewery: Abbaye Notre-Dame de Saint-Rémy (Rochefort, Belgium)
Style: Belgian Quadrupel
11.3% ABV / 27 IBU

There will be no bombshells or revelations here: Trappistes Rochefort 10 is one of the finest beers in the world. This Belgian Quadrupel—known for its distinctive blue cap—is a 2x gold medal winner at the World Beer Championships and currently sports perfect “100” scores on the Beer Advocate and RateBeer websites. It is a joy to drink straight from the 330ml bottle or in a wider mouthed tulip glass, where you can admire the beer’s rich caramel color and experience a resplendent warming effect that’s unusual for non-barrel aged beers.

Although monks at the Rochefort Abbey have been brewing beer consistently since 1899, Trappistes Rochefort 10 (the name refers to the beer’s original gravity in the archaic Belgian system of degrees) is the relative newcomer, with a recipe developed in 1952. In a sense, it’s one of the original craft beers, handmade by artisans that have been perfecting their techniques for decades. Like a lot of Belgian beers, this one is top-fermenting and features the Rochefort Abbey’s own strain of yeast. It also features water drawn from the well at the Abbey. Like a New York bagel, the character of the water (and specifically the mineral composition of that water) is crucial; you can’t make a beer like this without it.

Other than the proprietary yeast strain and the well water, the other major innovation with Trappistes Rochefort 10 was the introduction of candy sugar, which is added to the wort. The sugar plus the barley malt makes for a fanciful sweetness that evokes cherries, plums, figs, and dates. But there’s also some spiciness, partly from the hops but more from the coriander, the essential spice in Indian cuisine that seems to sneak into every Trappist brew. Celebrated beer guru Michael Jackson (not that one) described this Belgian quad as being both food at drink. It is more than just science or magic; it is extraordinary.

Five For Friday: September 25, 2020

Hello, Decibel readers. Listeners of the metal of death and its environs.

This week brings something for almost everybody. Plenty of pure death metal, the latest from black metal’s (morning)star children in Uada, and some stuff for the power and trad-metal folks as well.

Enjoy:

Blazon Rite – Dulce Bellum Inexpertis E.P.

These Philly headbangers are here to keep the original heavy metal flame burning into the 2020s like it was still the early 80s. The band’s guitar tone and attitude give the music an added 70s stadium-rock feel. The band takes a very fist-pumping, anthemic approach to their music. Let’s hope one day there will still be arenas to pack. With any luck, Blazon Rite will be headlining one.

Infesticide – Envenoming Wounds

Mexico’s Infesticide make pure, filthy, ferocious death metal. If you crave extremity in the vein of Seven Churches, Abominations of Desolation-era Morbid Angel and Scream Bloody Gore-era Death, you have really good taste. Congrats! Also, you need to crank Envenoming Wounds immediately.

Morta Skuld – Suffer for Nothing

Not sure how these dudes escaped my attention before, but they’ve been around since 1990, pumping out death metal in style similar to Morpheus Descends, Gorement, Purtenance and other masters. But somehow, I suppose their name got lost in the shuffle of time. Here’s to changing that! Go listen to 1993’s Dying Remains, and then check out the band’s new jams on Suffer for Nothing.

Sacred Outcry – Damned for All Time

Never mind subtlety. Throw shyness to the wind. Toss discretion to the rocks. THIS. IS. METAAAAAAAL!!! Some real fun stuff if you’re looking for something powerful and epic. If you’re all about swords, dragons, and sorcery, you’ll dig this.

Damned For All Time by Sacred Outcry

Uada – Djinn

From out of the caves and into the desert sands comes the latest from Portland’s Uada. The band’s penchant for flowing black metal has been scaled back in favor of strains of post-rock, classic heavy metal, and other influences that make for a dynamic listening experience. From someone who was never really into the band’s brand of black metal, this makes Djinn much more interesting and worth exploring. Maybe you’ll feel the same way.

Video Premiere: Cadaver – “Morgue Ritual”

On November 27th, in cooperation with Nuclear Blast, Norwegian death metal duo Cadaver will release their first new full-length album in 16 years. Titled Edder & Bile, this album makes good on the promise they made to us last year, upon the release of the single “Circle of Morbidity,” that there was more on the way.

Today we have the pleasure of unveiling the shocking visual accompaniment for “Morgue Ritual,” the first single from Edder & Bile. Directed by Gnarlos Wright + Rake and MM Fabrications, with creative direction from the latter as well 4815 Studio, and featuring performers Jeanelle Mastema, Luzia Lowe, Sean Forester, Brynn Route and MM, with body art provided by Triple Six Tattoos, Seventh Dean, MM Fabrications, Jason Adcock and Andie Preuss, “Morgue Ritual” is decidedly NSFW and viewer discretion is advised.

“The riffs to ‘Morgue Ritual’ are an instant time machine to that glorious epoch of extreme metal’s spawning,” writes Dirk Verbeuren, Cadaver’s drummer since 2014. “For those in the know, there was a distinct energy in the air. Bands across the globe were pulverizing boundaries and the possibilities were endless. I couldn’t envision a better way to unveil the new Cadaver than with this song!”

Cadaver’s founding member and guitarist/bassist/vocalist Anders Odden writes, “‘Morgue Ritual’ is based on a song called ‘Morgue Rifling’ from the very first Cadaver demo, Into The Outside from 1988. For some reason, this song never made it to our first couple of albums and it’s a pleasure to finally release it. It’s a song based on our thrash metal roots along with lyrics about the hypocrisy of organized religion. ‘Resist the claims of heaven – resist the claims of hell – under the burden of reality – we find the human spell’ Enjoy!”

“Morgue Ritual”

Preorder Edder & Bile today.

Presave the album to Spotify, Apple Music and Deezer here.
