The New Omega of EPICA

After five years of no ‘new’ music from EPICA the Dutch symphonic death metal band was supposed to return in 2020 with their brand new album Omega. But then of course Covid hit and the album that the band are so proud of had to wait on the shelf a little longer.

Of course the meer fact that we even have an album from the band is a feat upon itself.

SOILWORK Deliver A Masterpiece

With the events of this year causing so many artists to change their plans for 2020 any music fan out there could be forgiven for thinking that this could be a year where the musical highlights were of pretty low standard. Someone forgot to tell Soilwork that though.

Instead of taking things easy over the past few months the band found time to challenge themselves with the epic masterpiece – they wanted to do something they had never done before and the result was the brand new EP The Whisp Of The Atlantic.

GRINSPOON Dust Off The Cobwebs

The festival season is kicking back in, with several large scale shows already being announced for next year.

Among them is Scene & Heard, set down for February 21 in Newcastle, a festival made up of some of last centuries most popular – and still relevant – acts.

One of which is Grinspoon, the festival headliners and voice of the downtrodden youth since the release of Guide To Better Living in 1997, an album which to this day still serves as an unofficial anthem for those who like to live life moderately outside of conventional parameters.

HATEBREED “Weight Of The False Self”

It should be no surprise that Hatebreed have deliver once of the best albums to sum up 2020. In a lot of ways a Hatebreed album is a lot like what 2020 has been like – brutal, confronting, unrelenting and feels like being smashed in the face with a sledgehammer.

During a career that has spanned eight albums and two decades Hatebreed have rarely strayed away from the formula that they know works for them.

GROWTH “The Smothering Arms Of Mercy”

There are two things that you should probably know about Melbourne prog-death outfit Growth. First of all they are ambitious – I mean what other band jumps head first into their career with a trilogy of albums exploring something as deep as mental illness. And secondly they are a band that will never die wondering. As a band they try everything humanly possible on this album and unlike some other bands out there they live up to their prog description by wearing it as a badge of honour.

ELEPHANT GUN “Now To Survive”

There are just some bands that really take you back to a time and place whenever you hear them. Yes, I am going to sound like an old codger when I say this but one listen to the brand new Elephant Gun album and I was transported back to my uni days. Back to a very well spent youth that saw me in live music venues every Friday and Saturday night eager to hear bands like Magic Dirt, The Mark Of Cain and Spiderbait plying their wares.

KAI CULT Releases “Massive Checks”

Melbourne-based DIY post-punk artist Kai Cult has just revealed his warped new single “Massive Checks” – produced by the artist himself and mixed by Ashwin Rao from the Singaporean Garage Rock band Knightingale.

Opening with grinding basslines, atmospheric guitar vibrato and commanding sung-spoken lead vocals, “Massive Checks” is a party punk anthem for the dystopian present. Foreboding tones scatter across the record as the track takes a momentary dip, before launching into an eccentric outro, full of piercing guitar solos.

Conquering Lands With DEATH DEALER

There are some people in the heavy music scene that simply don’t need an introduction. The man known commonly as Ross The Boss is one of those people.
