Here’s one sure to piss off the fascist segment of metaldom. The album this track is taken from is the direct beneficiary of—gasp!—socialism. Scottish extreme metal quartet Tyrannus are receiving support for their debut full-length, Unslayable, thanks to an artistic grant via Creative Scotland, funded by the National Lottery. And it was money well spent/gambled. “The Flood,” the third track on Unslayable, mixes incessant thrash riffing with black metal aggression and post-black metal atmospherics. There are even psych touches as the band briefly relents from the black-spattered blast-beat attack to add some washes of lightness and color.
Tyrannus began as a duo—Callum John Cant (vocals/guitars) and Alasdair Dunn (drums/percussion)—in 2018. After recording the three-song demo, It Taketh, in 2021, which caught the ear of True Cult Records, the pair added Fraser Gordon (guitars) and Alistair Harley (bass/synth/backing vocals) and recorded Unslayable with Scott McLean (Falloch) at La Chunky Studios, between October 2021 and January 2022. The album is set for release by the band—with above mentioned assistance—on April 22 on digipak CD and digitally (preorder here), while the vinyl and cassette versions are set for release via True Cult (preorder here).
Callum John Cant had this to say about the track:
“‘The Flood’ was the first song we wrote for this album and is essentially our mission statement for our music. It will give listeners an expectation for Tyrannus and Unslayable: a weaving story with concepts that are both personal and collective in scope.”
