Watch: Capra Perform at Pulse of the Maggots

Louisiana-based metallic hardcore band Capra released their debut album, In Transmission, in April 2021. In the year since, the quartet have shown themselves to be road warriors, completing numerous tours, both by themselves and supporting the likes of Eyehategod.

Capra’s sound recalls the best parts of the mid-aughts metallic hardcore scene. In Transmission shares DNA with Converge and Every Time I Die, combining bouncing, moshable sections with emotive, post-metal parts. The Lafayette-based band also caught the attention of Knotfest, the touring festival masterminded by nü-metal institution Slipknot, who featured the band for the digital event Pulse of the Maggots in September 2021. The 12-minute performance is available to watch below, offering a good primer of what Capra sounds like and why they are a band to watch.

“Check out this livestream that we did for Knotfest’s Pulse of the Maggots if you haven’t already,” says guitarist Tyler Harper. “If you have, watch it again. Show it to your boss and then fight him while it plays. You might lose your job, but you’ll have a really cool story that involves us. We thank you for that.

“Expect some more tour info (And maybe even new music!) very soon. In the meantime – see you at Furnace Fest!”

Video Premiere: Roadkiller ft. Jess Margera  – “Like the Crow”

We recently got to know Roadkiller—the Philly-based speed rock solo project of excellently-monikered Phillipa Tank—via the punk-forward blaster “Slicker Than Oil,” which features legendary Municipal Waste (ect.) drummer Dave Witte guesting on the track. Only a month later, Roadkiller is back with a new single and video for “Like the Crow”—and a new guest drummer in the form of CYK’s Jess Margera.

“I knew Jess Margera would be perfect for it,” says Tank. “He obliged and we knocked it out at the hobbit hole at Castle Bam before Castle Bam was Castlebam Studios. We tracked with Chris Weyh, beers and Spinal Tap!”

“I had so much fun being part of this badass album,” offers Margera. “This particular track has more hooks than a tackle box and is heavier than a death in the family.”

“Like the Crow” is featured on Roadkiller’s debut LP, Pick of the Litter, which will be available later this year.

Catch Roadkiller at these hometown shows:
April 2: Century Bar in Philadelphia, PA
April 8: Kung Fu Necktie, Philadelphia, PA

Track Premiere: Old Spirit “Snow Leopard”

Heavy Mental outfit Old Spirit fuse disparate worlds of NWOBHM, doom, thrash, and psych rock with an acid-soaked aesthetic. Think: Witchfinder General falling into a very deep hole of the Crazy World of Arthur Brown, where Mercyful Fate and members of the Melvins are playing a high stakes game of Cribbage. Formed by instrumentalist/songwriter Jason Hartman, Old Spirit is an extension of (but worlds away from) his work in dream-doom purveyors Vanishing Kids, doom metal outfit Jex Thoth, alt metal outfit Night Eyez. Clearly, the Wisconsinite is prolific even as his eyes point skyward and his spirit ever inward.

“Snow Leopard” is a track that grinds into inner spaces of panoramic, if dangerous colors. It weighs heavy on the ears but it’s lithe on the mind. Hartman, under his Old Spirit guise, is bridging the wilds of ’60s/’70s psych rock–from Haight-Ashbury to the heart of Germany–with purposeful thrust into the far extremes of metal. “Snow Leopard” may not hit on the first go-around, but once its swirling claws sink into things, it’s hard to let go. Kind of like what Hawkwind were doing on Hall of the Mountain Grill but with the songwriting ethos of Trouble and inexplicably Voivod. Again, Old Spirit is old in style but modern in execution.

Says Hartman: “‘Snow Leopard’ is about a spiritual journey after death. The music to me on this one mixes some early metal favorites of mine. Mercyful Fate and Voivod are probably the most prevalent on this track.”

Ride into the mountains of the self with Old Spirit’s “Snow Leopard.”

** Old Spirit’s debut self-titled album, Old Spirit, is out now on Bright As Night Records. LP, CD, and digital are available now from Old Spirit’s Bandcamp (HERE).
